We need to Reframe Innovation

The rapid pace of innovation in Asia raises several ethical, social, and environmental concerns. We believe RI will empower a generation of organisations and individuals to shape the future of innovation in the region - going beyond mere ESG compliance to a strategic advantage and changemaking movement.

The Framework

The RADAr Framework is a practical approach to responsible innovation. It helps researchers, innovators, and leaders design solutions that are thoughtful, inclusive, and socially responsive.
RADAr stands for:

‍R – Reflect
Pause to critically examine your intentions, values, assumptions, and the impact of your work. This includes evaluating your process, assessing your solution, and committing to continuous learning and growth.

‍A – Anticipate
Look ahead to consider possible consequences — both intended and unintended. This involves understanding the problem deeply, exploring potential solutions, and evaluating short- and long-term outcomes.

‍D – Diversify
Broaden the range of perspectives involved. Engage different stakeholders, explore alternative approaches, and consider how diverse communities may be affected over time.

‍Ar – Adapt & Respond
Stay flexible and responsive as new insights or challenges emerge. Assess changing situations, refine your approach, and implement meaningful improvements.

Together, RADAr equips innovators to anticipate change, reflect critically, include diverse voices, and adapt responsibly — ensuring innovation is not just effective, but equitable and sustainable.

SukkhaCita

SukkhaCitta pioneers natural solutions to ensure a net positive impact on the environment, striving to empower women artisans and farmers in Indonesian villages, preserve indigenous traditions, and promote sustainability.

Muji: A Case Study in Responsible Innovation

Muji, the Japanese minimalist brand, has emerged as a model for responsible innovation. Its commitment to simplicity, quality, and sustainability aligns closely with the principles of the RADAr framework, a comprehensive approach to ethical and social innovation.

Patagonia

Patagonia, Inc. is an American retailer of outdoor recreation clothing, equipment, and food. It was founded by Yvon Chouinard in 1973 and is based in Ventura, California. Patagonia operates stores in more than 10 countries globally, as well as factories in 16 countries.

NUS CGS MBA

In collaboration with NUS CGS, we ran our On Our RADAr card game with MBA students from Prof Lawrence Loh’s Sustainability Strategy course. The session sparked bold thinking, as students tackled complex dilemmas and long-term impacts—proving that Responsible Innovation is more than theory; it’s a mindset future leaders are ready to embrace.

Tokyo Women's Christian University

We welcomed 29 undergraduates from Tokyo Women’s Christian University to SMU, in collaboration with ThinkX, for their first hands-on experience with an innovation framework—delivered in English. To support their learning, we created a Japanese version of our Responsible Innovation worksheet, enabling deeper engagement. Despite language barriers, tools like Google Lens helped us co-create a safe, encouraging space for idea-sharing. The students explored interdisciplinary problem-solving and were even inspired by SMU’s architecture, proposing ideas like Green Curtains. Along the way, we learned the power of patience, affirmation, and creativity when navigating across cultures and languages.

SUSS Workshop

We held our first intergenerational session for RADAr, bringing together aspiring founders ranging in age from 18 to 65. The diverse group shared a wealth of creative ideas, including one for a digital application to burn hell bank notes virtually—an innovative approach to reduce carbon emissions from traditional practices. Beyond the brainstorming, participants had a great time and walked away equipped with a fresh framework to shape their business plans and products.
